At the 1931 and 1934 Senate elections, a split in the Australian Labor Party led to rivalry between a Federal Labor Party and other Labor groupings, particularly in New South Wales.

The 1931 Senate election was the first contested by the United Australia Party as the new conservative party grouping opposing the Labor Party. It was also the first election at which anti-Labor parties (at this election, the United Australian Party and the Country Party) ran joint tickets for Senate elections in some states; see the Glossary entry for Seats won by ticket.
