The New South Wales Legislative Council as the upper house of the bicameral NSW parliament has only been a directly elected chamber since 1978. From 1856 until 1934 its members were nominated by the government of the day, and from 1934 to 1978 its membership was indirectly elected by the members of the Legislative Assembly (the lower house) and the non-retiring members of the Council; for details and references, see the notes to the 1978 Legislative Council election.
Since 1978, the Legislative Council has had from 42 to 45 members with a third or half the membership to be elected at each election. Members have been elected by proportional representation using the single transferable vote method with modifications which have varied over the period since 1978; for details, see the notes for each election.
