Loss of election: The Australian Labor Party government led by Rudd was defeated at the election for the House of Representatives on 7 September 2013 by a coalition of the Liberal Party and the National Party led by Abbott.

Coalition government: In the tables above, the Abbott government is shown as a coalition of the Liberal Party and the National Party, but at the election for the House of Representatives and the Senate held on 13 September 2013, four separate parties were allied to form a coalition government. These were: the Liberal Party (with representatives from all states and the Australian Capital Territory); the Liberal National Party (with representatives from Queensland); the National Party (with representatives from New South Wales and Victoria); and the Country Liberal Party (with a representative from the Northern Territory). In parliament members from all these electoral parties were associated with either the Liberal Party caucus, or the National Party caucus.

Change of party leader: After a series of unfavourable public opinion polls for the Liberal Party and Prime Minister Abbott, and disagreements within the Liberal Party caucus over government policy and some of the Prime Minister's decisions, Abbott was defeated as leader of the Liberal Party by Turnbull at a meeting of the Parliamentary Liberal Party on 14 September 2015 by a vote of 54 to 44. Abbott resigned as Prime Minister with effect from 15 September 2015.
